Ethnic Nationalism

A lot is heard about ethnic based separatist movements, like people of a particular region in a country having issues with people of other regions within the country. Most of the reasons are ethnic or cultural and the demands range from territorial autonomy to complete independence.

Why does it happen? Well for that we have to go back in history. During the age of empires, the political boundaries were not limited to the cultural boundaries but depended on the ruler's imperial capacities. For examples: Maratha Empire had conquered and ruled states like Gujarat and Central India which were culturally distinct. The French Empire ruled Italy and Spain. The Japanese Empire briefly ruled nations in South East Asia and Korea. The British, well their rule was in every continent of the world.

When concept of Nation-State emerged, it started changing political boundaries. Most common factor was language; kingdoms like Prussia, Saxony, Bavaria etc. joined to form Germany, as they all had a common language and culture. On the other hand Austro-Hungarian Empire disintegrated into Austria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia and other smaller regions because they were culturally distinct.

Former Empire and present day nations

Some remnants of former empires remained as one nation forming a Federation. Countries like India, Russia and Indonesia are such examples where every state, subject or province speaks different languages and are culturally distinct.

Even at present there are some separatist movements taking place in the world. Scotland recently had a referendum on independence, Catalonia region of Spain wants independence as they speak Catalan language and not Spanish. Kurds of Iraq, Syria, Iran and Turkey want to create Kurdistan for themselves, as they speak Kurdish language but are currently living in Arabic, Persian and Turkish speaking countries. The main factor for separatist movement is oppression by the dominant ethnic group. That was the main reason Bangladesh separated from Pakistan. As the concept of nationalism changes, we will get to see alteration in the political boundaries on the world map in years to come.

  1. Interesting read.

Sure oppression is one thing but do not forget Economics. Ethnic groups will always have their disputes, what continues is trade. We are slowly moving towards a point in world trade where national boundaries are only proving to be a hindrance. Considering the age-old trend of adjusting policies for convenience, either national boundaries will eventually be discarded one by one or policies will be adjusted to facilitate international trade (which unites people and globalizes the world in its own way).

    1. Oh yes! I forgot economical reasons. Regions which have better scope to development and progress by separating will rebel. Catalonia and Venice are such regions.

Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Content Creation & Employment

There are many things Artificial Intelligence can do, but there are some things the AI cannot do, like writing this blog. This year has seen the rise of AI, and since then AI service platforms and content created by these platforms have taken over the internet. Initially, it was believed that like previous industrial revolutions, this new invention will affect the basic entry-level jobs with lower skills, but it directly attacked those jobs that require higher levels of skills. As Artificial Intelligence improves, it will get better and will compete with artists, writers, actors, singers, and musicians, along with other jobs like product delivery, sales and even data collection and data interpretation.   But can there be a human civilisation where everything is automated? If everything right from art to programming is going to be done by AI, what kind of jobs would humans do? How will the economic cycle function? This sudden rise of AI is perceived to be a major threat to human re

Indian Mythical Creatures

Like other countries India have its own folk lore. Many of them are based on Vedic religion or Hinduism, Jainism & Buddhism. There are many non-human creatures portrayed in the mythologies like Rakshasa, Vanara, Naga, Yaksha, Astomi, Gandharva, Asura, Preta, Vritra(Dragon) and many more. Some of them have relation with creatures of other regions like Europe, China and Japan etc while some of them are found in urban legends. Here’s what I think about it. Vanara:   Ape like humanoid, with brains & capacities like humans, who helped Rama in war against Ravana in epic Ramayana. Although these creatures are considered as mythical still they shows signs that they could exist. They could be the “Yetis” who dwell in Himalayas. According to legend yetis are those apes like people who like in groups, have backbone like humans & can speak language. Although it is not proved that they exist, if considered they have great similarities with Vanara. Yaksha:   They are mythical crea

Speculative Hindu Temple Architecture: Modern style

India has a wonderful variety of Hindu temple architectures. Each style evolved from previous one during a particular era and under a particular cultural influence. But after colonial period, the style stopped evolving further and all later modern temples we see today have borrowed heavily from the styles that existed before. Although there are a few hipster styles today, but still it’s little bland if you compare it with the kind of architectures that existed before. So, how would’ve been Hindu temple architecture of today’s India if we follow its pattern? But first let’s check out all types of Hindu temple architecture styles in India and abroad. You definitely must be aware of the most common styles – the north Indian ‘Nagara’, the south Indian ‘Dravida’, and its blend known as ‘Vessara’. But there are many regional styles which often get unnoticed by the common folk. Let’s check them out. Types of Hindu Temple Architecture Early Nagara Shikhara with Gavaksha Dravida Vimana Vessar
